Dorchester Round Table has donated £10,000 to Yeovil Freewheelers, known as YFW Blood Bikes, to aid in establishing a new base at Dorset County Hospital. This significant contribution stems from the proceeds of the highly successful 2023 Dorchester Cider Festival.
YFW Blood Bikes is a group of emergency volunteer bikers that has been serving the NHS since 1978. Operating from bases at Yeovil, Wincanton, and now Dorset County Hospital, they play a crucial role in transporting blood, medical samples, and essential supplies between hospitals, hospices, and nursing homes. The group, founded by Mr. Cecil Turner, proudly stands as the oldest operational blood bike group in the country, tirelessly supporting the NHS and saving lives.
Yeovil Freewheelers were providing the Blood Bike service for West Dorset from their base at Yeovil District Hospital but have now established a new base at Dorset County Hospital. Dorchester Round Table have decided to support their work and the establishment of a base at DCH by gifting £10,000 to them from the funds raised at last year’s Cider Festival.
The donation from Dorchester Round Table is a testament to the community’s recognition of YFW Blood Bikes’ exceptional service. This financial support will significantly contribute to the maintenance and operation of their fleet of motorcycles.
YFW Blood Bikes were one of our primary charities at the 2023 Dorchester Cider Festival with a dedicated stand to showcase their invaluable contributions and services.
Their vital voluntary service plays a crucial role in our community, and we’re honoured to contribute to their cause. Find out more about YFW Blood Bikes: www.yfwbloodbikes.org
